Our first blog post - February 20, 2017 - The value of Unboxing
Welcome to Unbox and Buy. This is our first (or hopefully many!) blog posts. Let’s dig in…
Figuring out what to buy is hard. It’s hard because we have so many choices. Go to Amazon to shop for a TV and you’ll find 10s of thousands of choices.
Even if you filter by size and type, you’ll still have hundreds of choices – all with between 4-5 stars and all with hundreds of reviews.
So how do you decide which one to buy?
You could say price, but that’s hard to use as a) many of the prices are so close together,
and b) we expect less from a lower price so that impacts what the reviews actually mean.
For example, take two computers: One is $400 and has a 4.5 star rating and one is $800 and has a 4.5 star rating.
It doesn’t necessarily follow that the $400 one is a better deal as people who bought the $800 one likely had higher expectations.
The next thing you could use to make a decision is to look at the specs.
The challenge here is that there are no many specs that it’s hard to figure out what any of them mean, much less know which ones are going to be important for you.
Megahertz? Aspect ratio? Do most people really know how important any of that is?
So what’s left? Well let’s consider the moment after you buy something that you know you made a good or bad decision.
When is that? Usually, it’s after you unbox it, after you install it, and after you get to use it for the first time.
So what if you could see other people do that for the products you were considering, and then choose a product based on that experience?
That’s what Unbox and Buy is about – we give you the opportunity to see other people unbox products before you buy them.
We have all products in nine categories, including computers,
For each category, you will see a list of the top 20-40 products (sorted by Amazon sales rank) for which we are also able to find an unboxing video. For example,
in the electronics category, one of the top products now is a $205 wireless sound system from Sony. Should you buy it? Is it for you?
Instead of pouring through hundreds or reviews or comparing it to 50 similar products, simply watch the video and get a sense of what the experience would be like if you bought it and openned it. Then you can make a better decision.
That's it! We'll add more blog posts later, but if you have any feedback or comments, please let us know.
